Zen mocktail made with cucumber juice, elderflower cordial, and basil served over ice in a white wine glass with a cucumber ribbon garnish

When a drink needs to feel crisp, aromatic, and genuinely refreshing, cucumber and fresh herbs are a strong base. The Zen mocktail combines cucumber juice, elderflower cordial, and fresh basil into a light, elegant serve that works for warm days, brunch, and any zero alcohol menu that still aims for cocktail-level balance.

It is simple in structure but layered in flavor: cooling cucumber up front, floral sweetness in the middle, and a soft herbal finish.

Flavor Profile

  • Cucumber juice: clean, watery, cooling

  • Elderflower cordial: floral, lightly sweet, fragrant

  • Basil: green, aromatic, subtly peppery

The result is refreshing rather than sugary, with a “garden-fresh” aromatic lift.

Notes on Ingredients (Beginner Friendly)

Cucumber juice: is mostly water and commonly associated with hydration-forward drinks, with small amounts of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin K and potassium depending on serving size and variety.

Basil: is valued primarily for aroma in beverages, and it has been studied for antioxidant-related compounds in food science literature.

Elderflower: has a long tradition of use in herbal preparations, but health claims should be kept conservative because evidence quality varies by preparation and study type.

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C): is commonly used in food prep to help slow oxidation and reduce browning in fresh produce and juices.

Knowing a recipe is not the same as executing it properly behind the bar.

Recipe Card

Time needed: 15 minutes

Yield: 1 serve

Technique: Build (with blended and strained cucumber-basil base)

Glass: White wine glass, 12 fl oz (355 ml)

Tools

  • Glass jar

  • Juice extractor

  • Immersion blender

  • Scale

  • Peeler

  • Spoon

  • Double strainer

Ingredients (Serves 1)

  • 200 ml (6.7 oz) cucumber juice

  • 30 ml (1.0 oz) elderflower cordial (suggested brand: Belvoir)

  • 30 ml (1.0 oz) soda water

  • 20 g (0.7 oz) basil leaves

  • 2 g (0.07 oz) ascorbic acid

Procedure

  1. Prepare the glass: Add basil leaves to the juice and blend with an immersion blender, keeping leaves submerged during blending. Fine-strain again for a smooth consistency.

  2. Add sweetness: Mix in 30 ml (1.0 oz) elderflower cordial and stir well.

  3. Assemble the drink: Fill the chilled glass with ice cubes. Pour about 180 ml (6.1 oz) of the premix into the glass.

  4. Finish with soda: Top with 30 ml (1.0 oz) soda water to preserve carbonation. Stir gently.

  5. Garnish and serve: Garnish with a thin cucumber ribbon or a basil sprig. If preferred, a mint sprig can be used as an alternative aromatic garnish.

Shelf Life

10 days (refrigerated) for the premix, assuming clean handling, sealed storage, and consistent cold chain.

Premium mocktails should not taste like juice with garnish.
