Wellcraft bar

Well Craft is a place to discover an unparalleled craft beer experience. More than just a bar and restaurant, Well Craft offers over 300 unique craft brews from all around the world. It is a haven for beer enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike. To complement the refreshing chilled beers, guests can enjoy delicious Italian pizzas, Mexican food like tacos and fajitas, explore a variety of natural wines, and groove to great music playlist that creates a chill, vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

This quirky hidden spot nestled in Sri Hartamas KL also offers a fun experience for guests like the Chug-a-Beer Challenge, a pool table, and the most unexpected thing to find in a beer place, a barber shop. Not only that, Well Craft is also a pet-friendly space.

A little chat with the owner…

We sat down with the passionate owner, Mr. Vandai, to discuss how Malaysians could develop a taste for quality brews. According to him, making craft beer more accessible is key. “If more places offered craft beers at better prices, it would attract more drinkers. With larger volumes, costs would drop, making it easier for bars across Malaysia to stock craft options,” he said. When asked about customer favorites, he noted, “Lagers are the go-to here. I try to introduce customers to better lagers since commercial ones don’t compare to quality craft versions.” For him, familiar styles like lager are the gateway to broader beer appreciation. And the best beer-producing country? “New Zealand,” he answered without hesitation. “They have great water, which makes great beer. They are underrated but have some outstanding brews.”

With this vision, he’s hopeful Malaysians will start exploring craft beers from around the world, discovering quality beyond the commercial labels.

The menu..

A double-sided page A3 size synthetic plastic menu for the array of food. There is no beer menu. You

simply just check the beers out in the chiller and make your pick or let the friendly staff at Well Craft

know your preference and what you’re craving for, and they’ll pick the perfect one for you to try.

Tasting the goodies..

Van Honsebrouck St. Louis Premium Framboise

We started off with a suggestion from the staff. When we asked for something sweet and light, they suggested a lambic—a choice that missed the mark, as lambics are typically more sour and acidic than sweet. This slip suggested that the staff’s knowledge of their menu might need refining. That said, Tcass found some redeeming qualities: the lambic had a fruity, slightly sweet profile that reminded her of cider. Though it was a far cry from the easy-drinking sweetness we had hoped for,the lambic was refreshing, easy to sip, and just as easy to finish.

About the beer:

Name: Van Honsebrouck St. Louis Premium Framboise

Style: Lambic - Fruited

Brewed by: Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck (Emelgem, Belgium)

ABV: 2.8% / IBU: N/A

Price: RM30 ($7 / €6)

St-Louis Premium Framboise is a frambozenbier, or raspberry beer, based on a lambic. St-Louis Premium Framboise contains 25% juice from Willamette raspberries with their pure, natural sugars. It is a thirst-quencher with a low alcohol content. It’s a very fruity beer with a beautiful balance between the sweet taste of the raspberries and the slightly sour taste of the lambic.

The Garden Pilsner

Next, we took matters into our own hands and chose The Garden Brewery’s Pilsner. It is served in a

right glass, with an unfiltered look that made it seem easygoing, though it wasn’t as clean as expected. Tcass described it as bitter with hoppy aromas and flavors, but overall, it was easy to drink, just like a pilsner should be.

About the beer:

Name: The Garden Pilsner

Style: Pilsner

Brewed by: The Garden Brewery

ABV: 4.5%  / IBU: 27

Price: RM36 ($8 / €7)

Clean, crisp and classic. A traditional German Pilsner perfect for Summer drinking by the Adriatic Sea. A full malt bill with bready and soft caramel notes; generously hopped with Hallertauer Mittlefruh and Saaz; fermented with Bavarian yeast. Super sessionable

Mango Cider by Taiwan Head Brewers

We decided to try another staff recommendation. When we asked for something super light, we were offered the Mango Cider by Taiwan Head Brewers. At just 3.5% ABV, the alcohol presence was barely noticeable, making it feel more like sipping on a fizzy, light mango juice. The strong mango aroma was appealing at first, but the cider had a slightly artificial, chemical taste that became off- putting the more we drank. While it started refreshing, the more we sipped, the harder it became to

finish.

About the cider:

Style: Cider

ABV: 3.5% / IBU: N/A

Price: RM36 ($8 / €7)

Mango cider is a refreshing alcoholic beverage made by fermenting apple or other fruit-based cider with mangoes or mango flavoring. It combines the natural sweetness and tropical essence of mango with the crisp, tangy notes of cider, creating a balanced drink with a fruity and slightly tart profile. Typically enjoyed chilled, mango cider is popular as a light, flavorful option for casual gatherings or warm weather occasions.

Filou

For the next one we decided to choose for ourselves and went with the Filou. This Belgian Tripel did not disappoint. The Belgian yeast was clearly present, as expected, complementing its nice golden hue. It had a malty, spiced profile with a pleasant aftertaste—something that many beers lack. It was slightly bitter, but the bitterness was balanced and enjoyable, making it a standout choice.

About the beer:

Name: Filou

Style: Abbey Tripel

Brewed by: Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck (Emelgem, Belgium)

ABV: 8.5%

Price: RM45 ($10 / €9)

Filou is a rascal that you take lightly at your peril. Introduced in 2014, this young member of the Van Honsebrouck family packs a grown up punch. Filou will surprise you with its naughty character, but is calling it a rascal or a scamp a little disrespectful? In fact, the name is a nod and a wink to both the drinker and the beer: Filou goes down so easily that you’ll be asking for a refill before long. What about the drinker? Is he or she a rascal who can’t resist Filou’s temptations? Not many people will leave it at just the one glass, which poses the question: who is the biggest filou of the two? Filou is brewed with Belgian and Czech aromatic hops, pilsner malt and is refermented in the bottle.

To round off our drinking session, we sampled a few items from the menu.

Chicken Tacos

Price: RM36 ($8 / €7): The portion was reasonable, but the chicken was a bit dry. While tasty

overall, it could have been improved, especially considering the price.

Beef Fajitas

Price: RM39 ($9 / €8): This dish seems meant to serve two. Tender beef strips and soft, warm

tortillas. However, both the portion and taste can be better for the price it offers.

Our overall experience...

Well Craft stands out with its strong focus on craft beers, offering an extensive collection alongside a basic selection of commercial options and wines for variety. The atmosphere brings a sporty vibe, with TVs broadcasting sports and a pool table inside. A unique touch is the barber shop located just at the end of the bar, adding to the place's charm. The "Chug a Beer Challenge" complete with a leaderboard for the fastest drinkers, encourages a bit of friendly competition, while the lively music keeps the atmosphere fun and engaging. With over 100 beers to choose from and an online shop to explore, there is always something new to discover. The staff provides efficient service, fitting the overall relaxed vibe of the place. Tucked away in Sri Hartamas, this bar is a bit hidden but easy to find, thanks to its entertaining and quirky social media presence and is conveniently located near many other dining options.
